Super 8mm Workshop

This year, the Nickel will pair filmmakers with composers for their popular Super 8mm workshop, sending three filmmakers out to shoot an 8mm film that uniting music and visual imagery. The resulting films from this two-day workshop will be screened at next year’s festival. All filmmakers must have had a film screened previously at the Nickel festival. Participants will be chosen at random. Filmmakers will be given three minutes of film to be edited in camera and shot in one day. These films will then debut with LIVE accompaniment at the St. John’s Jazz Festival.

VideoFACT, the groundbreaking music video, website and epk production fund will present an in depth music video production workshop as a part of The Nickel Independent Film Festival. Facilitated by Toronto-based director Warren P. Sonoda and VideoFACT executive director Beverley McKee the day long workshop will focus on topics such as production financing, establishing yourself as a music video director and pitching on jobs, creating the right narrative for the artist featured in the music video, and an in-depth view of the realities of music video production in Canada.

In this lecture-style workshop facilitated by Anita McGee, participants will learn how to approach their second and third films. Where to get funding? How to budget for the biggest creative return? Some of the choices the Director will need to make include the script, the location, the cast and crew (size and expertise), working with a producer, and knowing where to put the money. Anita will provide answers to the most common questions emerging filmmakers ask when pursuing their next project.

Hosted By Lois Brown, this will be the third year of the wildly successful Nickel Screenplay Series. Screenplays by local writers are chosen by a committee of industry professionals. The successful writers are provided feedback by a high profile script consultant. Then the selections receive direction in the morning with a public reading by professional actors in the afternoon. Audiences are given the opportunity to hear works in progress read aloud and to give their own feedback to the writer.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation presents Working in HD, Location TBD, Saturday June 23, 10 am-1 pm, 2 pm-5 pm Early Bird: $25 Reg: $50 Please note space is limited Bob Petrie will facilitate a full day hands-on workshop for 10 experienced filmmakers who have an overall understanding of HD. The workshop will concentrate on understanding the difference between the equipment and shooting in HD vs. Non-HD. Filmmakers will have access to HD cameras for this workshop.
Celtx Screenwriting & Pre-Production Software Demonstration Thursday June 21, LSPU Hall 2:00-3:30 pm Free admission
This workshop is for all screenwriters-from established to emerging to ‘just about to write a screenplay’ as well as those involved in pre-production. Michelle Jackson from Celtx will facilitate a workshop on using their software in the writing and pre-production stages. She will cover format, script breakdowns, schedules and creative pre-production areas. This software has been especially useful for collaborating in pre-production phase.
If you are in the film industry, this is a workshop for you. Please feel free to bring your laptops. You will be provided with a copy of the software at the workshop.
