Tonight @ the Nickel

FRIDAY - 7:30pm

Heartless Disappearance into Labrador Seas (NL) - 24min.
dir. Justin Simms

Once upon a time a young school teacher named Lilly went around the bay for a vacation. A few weeks later she came home - married.   Andy Jones, Liane Balaban and Joel Thomas Hynes star in this short drama directed by Newfoundland's prolific filmmaker Justin Simms.

* Trailer  (QuickTime)

Ferron: Girl on a Road (NL) - 73min.
dir. Gerry Rogers

"I did my best to follow the calling of my soul..." So sings lesbian/songwriter Ferron.  In this dynamic new film from the director of "My Left Breast", the road serves as both the metaphor for the direction of life, and the literal narrative thread; tracing Ferron's reunion with her band and their first trek together in over a decade.

THURSDAY - 7:30pm

Out of the Blue (IRE) - 9min.
dir. Michael Lavelle

From thescope.ca

Effortlessly whimsical and dialogue-free, this Irish offering is equal parts comedy and pathos, overplaying neither element. The male lead’s face is a wonder to watch. It is like a giant baby’s, capturing our attention from frame one. He runs into the surf, ice cream cone carefully held aloft, to rescue a TV set that’s floating to shore. Like the best magic realism, the mechanics and meanings of the wonderous events are not addressed. The story merely exists, and we believe it fully, like the best of dreams.

THURSDAY - 10:00pm
Treevenge (NS) - 16min.
dir. Jason Eisner

From thescope.ca

The best thing about the 2007 film Grindhouse was the handful of fake coming attractions which effectively mimicked and spoofed the glory days of b-movie trailers with their lurid excess and gravelly-voiced, over the top announcers. The best of these trailers was Hobo With A Shotgun, submitted by a trio of Halifax filmmakers for a contest. That lead directly to the same team making Treevenge, which not only manages to out-do its predecessor, but it’s sure to be the favourite at the Nickel’s horror-themed night. Even if you’re normally not a fan of horror-comedies, you owe to yourself to see Jonathan Torrens get beaten to death by a deranged Christmas tree.

WEDNESDAY - 7:30pm

Countdown (NL)  - 9min.
dir. Jordan Canning

Jordan Canning and Laura Churchill, the director and producer of Countdown just came back Toronto this week for the premiere of the film at the National Screen Institute Drama Prize screening.  It was also featured in The Short Film Corner at the Cannes Film Festival presented by the NFB.

MELTING LANDS is a documentary that explores the affects of Global Warming in a small community in the Canadian North. The ice is melting faster every year. Melting Lands documents how this affects the Inuit peoples of the Nunavik community named Kangiqsujuaq (how they live, how they eat, how they survive), animal life (how the melting ice has affected caribou, polar bears, seals, fish, birds etc), nature (how the warming temperatures has introduced new species of plants, insects etc), and the economy (how the warming temperatures affect the cost of imported food, transport etc.).

Press Release

The 9th Annual Nickel Film Festival – For All Walks of Life!

June 23rd-27th 2009

INCO Innovation Centre, Memorial University

The Nickel Independent Film Festival’s 2009 program promises an exciting collection of over 70 films from around the world including Australia, Germany, Ireland, Israel and the United States as well as 29 homegrown productions from Newfoundland. With a reputation for presenting quality films from established and emerging artists, this young and energetic festival is leading the charge in the development of our indigenous film industry.

“That ‘no time to catch your breath’ kind of excitement is exactly what the Nickel Film Festival is all about…it’s the hottest ticket of the summer…”

Karla Hayward, The Telegram

With over 200 submissions to the festival this year, the programming committee chose a diverse collection of films from 3 feature lengths to a plethora of shorts ranging from experimental to narrative drama, documentary and animation. The five evening screenings will showcase approximately an hour and a half of films along with live entertainment featuring local artists which remains an important facet of our festival. This year, along with the Horror Night, we have added a late night Short & Giggly Screening on Wednesday and an Arts Matinee on Saturday. Saturday will also feature our annual Children’s Matinee with fun for the whole family. Throughout the week, there will be special events, parties and lots of opportunities to mix with local and visiting filmmakers.

Local filmmakers whose works will appear in the Nickel Festival this year include Sherry White, Christian Sparkes, Heidi Wicks, CNA’s Media Arts Centre, Justin Oakey, Roger Maunder, Stephen Dunn, Jamie Lewis, Victoria Young, The Rooms Animations Series, Jordan Canning, Darcy Fitzpatrick, Harbourside Studio, Justin Simms, Ruth Lawrence, Jody Rideout, Megan Jones, Beth Fagan, Viewfinders Animation, Movie and Green Screen Challenges, Justin Madol, Bill Coultas, Courtenay Kyle and Gerry Rogers.

The Nickel isn’t just a screening of films-it’s a complete artistic experience!

A regular feature of our festival is the excellent workshops offered throughout the week. This year we are offering Intermediate Screenwriting: a three day participatory workshop for screenwriters led by veteran film and television writer and story editor Noel Baker. We are also very excited to be screening a pre-festival viewing of cult classic Hard Core Logo. The Super 8 Workshop will be offered to selected participants for the fourth consecutive year in co-production with the Wreckhouse International Jazz and Blues Festival. This workshop will result in three new films being produced during this year’s festival. We are very excited to be offering our Filmmaker Masterclass facilitated by Chris Jones, director of the Oscar short listed film, Gone Fishing. The course will take you through the entire process of making a film from the first idea to the Oscars! Our Nickel Filmmaker Panel & Luncheon will give you the opportunity to hear local and visiting filmmakers talk about their experiences making film.  Our 5th Annual Screenplay Series will be facilitated by Lois Brown this year and provides an opportunity for 3 writers to work with a director and professional cast to rehearse their script and hear it read live to a public audience for their feedback and questions. The Nickel will be offering Directing with Justin Simms, which will be a workshop aimed at the emerging filmmaker. We are also thrilled to be offering Acting Naturally with CSI: NY veteran Robert Joy.

Tickets cost $10 for regular screenings, $7.50 for late night shows and $5 for the children’s matinee. Our Festival Pass is the best deal with 9 screenings for $60. As well, Early Bird Registration for the workshops means a 50% savings for interested participants, with subsidies upon request. Tickets can be purchased at the Holy Heart Box Office Monday through Friday 12pm-5pm in person or by phone at .

Edited in camera, the filmmakers have access to the camera for one day to shoot their film. This film is developed and returned to the filmmakers and composers.  A live score is played with the film and recorded at the Wreckhouse Jazz & Blues Festival.  This score is then married to the film and all resulting films from this series are screened at the next year’s Nickel festival.

This workshop is offered free to the successful participants. To qualify, filmmakers must have had a film screened at the Nickel Festival (previous or current year). Selection is based on a random draw from all interested parties.  Camera and film stock is provided. Facilitated by Roger Maunder.

A director is assigned and casts are chosen from the professional community.  The first half of the workshop day provides an opportunity for the writer to work with a director and professional cast to rehearse the script and provide feedback. In the second half of the day, the works in progress are presented in a staged read live to a public audience for their feedback and questions.

All emerging and established writers are welcome to join us at the reading!

St. John's Jazz Festival
Super 8mm Workshop
[Monday, July 17th - 10am]

The Jazz Festival and the Nickel team up to pair filmmakers with jazz musicians, sending them out to shoot an 8mm film that unites music and visual imagery. The resulting film will be screened on July 23rd at the closing night of the Jazz Festival, accompanied by a live
performance of its musical score. All filmmakers must have had a film screened at one or more Nickel festivals.

Nickel Screenplay Series
[Tuesday July 18th – 2-5pm]

Sponsored by ACTRA, this will be the second year of the wildly successful Nickel Screenplay Series. Three screenplays by local writers are chosen by a professional committee to be performed aloud by a selection of actors from St. John's. It is a chance to see how well the scripts read off the page, to learn about character and dialogue, and to find out how marketable the story may or may not be in the local market. It also gives audiences the opportunity to hear three works in progress read aloud and to give their own feedback to the writer.

Directing the Actor for Short Film
[Wednesday, July 19th – 1-5pm]

Facilitated by Justin Simms (Director, The King Hunt, Ashore), this workshop examines the relationship between Actor and Director for Short Film. In the world of Short Film, there are many challenges as a director, but unprepared actors on the day of the shoot should never
be one of them.

CBC Presents
Stop Animation with Brad Peyton

Thusday, July 20th
Workshop 10-3pm
Public Q&A 3:30-4:30pm

Born in Newfoundland, Brad Peyton is the creator and director of award winning Evelyn: the Cutest Evil Dead Girl. Currently, he is in development of several feature films, which he will direct, most notably the animated feature, The Spider and the Fly, produced by Tom
Hanks' Playtone. Brad Peyton is coming back to St. John's to do a Stop Animation Workshop. Move quickly as this event will sell out! Bringing minimal equipment, Brad will take you through the steps of how to get started with Stop Animation and what you can accomplish with an imagination and minimal gear. He will then gradually up the bar, and illustrate how by adding slightly more materials, you can achieve FAR MORE! The purpose of the workshop is to give a life of possibility to the interested stop-animator, to answer any questions of how to begin,
which materials work best, and what you can achieve with a minimal budget. Please note, due to the instructional element of this workshop, there is limited space available on a first come basis. There will be a more general Q&A with Brad (free of charge) following the workshop.

THE NICKEL INDEPENDENT FILM FESTIVAL
AND
NEIGHBOURHOOD DANCE WORKS
TEAM UP FOR FESTIVALS LAUNCH PARTY

(Wednesday, June 7th, 2006 - St. John's) On Monday, June 12th, The Nickel Independent Film Festival and The Festival of New Dance will throw their official launch party, kicking off both of the festivals with a celebration of film, dance and good old fashioned revelry.

Challenging and provocative, The Festival of New Dance is one of only a few in Canada, and is a sought after venue for dance artists from across the country. This year, in addition to top-notch dance performances, the audience will be treated to spectacular new media techniques that transform the stage into an oasis of light, sound and movement. The 2006 Festival, which runs from June 20 th-25th, promises to be an exceptional week, with nightly performances at the LSPU Hall as well as free, off-site events throughout St. John's.

With its eclectic showcase of film screenings, live readings, and musical and theatrical performances, The Nickel Independent Film Festival has become one of the most anticipated events of the summer. This year the Nickel celebrates its sixth festival with an incredible lineup of local and international films, as well as a daily schedule of thought-provoking workshops and panels geared towards professional filmmakers and the general public. The Nickel Independent Film Festival runs from July 18 th-22nd at the LSPU Hall.

The official launch party for both festivals will take place on Monday, June 12th at Bianca's Bar (171 Water St.) There will be film screenings at 8pm and 10pm, and a number of live dance performances, including a break dancing performance by members of The East Rock Crew.

Anyone and everyone is welcome, and cover is only five dollars. All proceeds from the night go towards the festivals.
