In 1929, the Nickel and the Majestic were the only two theatres to convert to the use of sound for their films. Even though the Majestic was charging a fee slightly lower than the Nickel, it's reputation kept it from thriving.

Many theatres have come and gone but the Nickel had survived past all expectations. No doubt due to its concern for the audiences it served. With an impressive span of fifty three years devoted to film, it is truly an inspiration to the industry today.

Since film was introduced in Newfoundland there have probably been many young men and women who dreamed of making movies. Although many ventures were undertaken, it was not until 1975 when the Newfoundland Independent Film Co-operative (NIFCO) was formed and afforded the independent filmmaker the help and expertise needed to succeed.

Since that time we have seen some special talent emerge from both sides of the camera. The Nickel Film and Video Festival hopes to have the chance to explore that talent. Not only for filmmakers in Newfoundland, but from anywhere where independent filmmakers want a chance to show their work. In the spirit of the Nickel Theatre we offer an affortable forum to encourage participation and to assist those woking on small budgets or any at all!

We figured that starting this festival was the best way to commemorate the Nickel Theatre and it's just the beginning! This festival will also provide a history of film in Newfoundland. Showing old films that have not been seen in years. Those stuck away among cob-webs that cry for an audience to see them.Ê Whispers as you pass....show me...show me!

"It was a very special thing to do. One of the nicest invitations I've had in a long while. When it has some meaning to it, such as this and means something not only to the present but the future, I want to be a part of that."
Gordon Pinsent, Guest of Honor, Nickel Festival, 2002

"It's wonderful to have another festival... this is not a luxury, it's not a frill, it's a necessity."
Gerry Rogers, Award winning filmmaker, "My Left Breast"

"...an amazing event with a really strong community feel."
Lois Brown, Award winning filmmaker, "The Bingo Robbers"

"The Nickel's program, with it's smallness and independence, avoids the glitz and strives for good screen."
J.M. Sullivan, The Evening Telegram, July 2001
